Knowing the Origins of Poker

Poker has a close resemblance to a game in Persia called "As Nas", which might have been passed on to French settlers living in New Orleans by the Persian sailors. The origins of the game's name will have most likely come from a French word "poque", which in turn came from the German word "pochen", meaning, "to knock". However, it is not really known whether poker's origins can be found with the games having those similar names.

Oftentimes, it is viewed as an ancestor of the game called "primero" during the Renaissance period, and "brelan" of France, as the game from England called "bragg", definitely descended from brelan and also incorporated a concept called bluffing in order to mislead other players. There could be a great possibility that all such early games have a high level of influence over the game we know as poker today.

An actor from England named Mister Joseph Crowell, has mentioned that the poker game has been played over the years in New Orleans since 1829. Back then, there was a deck of twenty cards, and the players, usually four, had to bet on the player who they thought had the most valuable hand. The game is believed to have spread from New Orleans to other parts of America by means of riverboats from the Mississippi.

Gambling then was a usual means of the locals to pass the time. Just as the gold rush had arose, so did the spread of the game from the Mississippi into the West, and is also viewed to have been an important characteristic in the ethos of frontier pioneering. It was just soon after that the game started to become popular, until a full English, 52-card deck began to be used. Soon after, certain characteristics of the game like the flush was then introduced.

In the American Civil War, various additions to the poker game then were made. This included the five-card variant, stud poker; draw poker, and the introduction of the straight. More American variations soon followed in 1875, which included what they called the wild card. Around about the 1900s, lowball and what was called split-pot poker had also developed; and towards the year 1925, various poker games were introduced into the community. The game then spread to countries in Asia because of the US military servicemen that were stationed there during World War Two.

Today, poker games can be found being played at home, at social gatherings, in casinos and on online casino sites. Thus is the popularity of the game that it can also be found in scenes of various films such as the popular English gangster film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
