The Poker Career of Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson also known as Texas Dolly is one of the founders of Texas Hold'em Poker. Doyle Brunson started playing illegal games in Forth Worth Texas with a friend Dwayne Hamilton. They traveled around Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana playing bigger games and fortunately met Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts.

During this time Doyle Brunson played illegal games run by criminals and well organized crime groups. Doyle Brunson admitted to having a gun pulled on him several times, and getting robbed and beaten as well.

Since that time being a poker player is not a socially accepted career. But Doyle Brunson earned his reputation from the people running the games he was playing in.

Hamilton decided to move back to Forth Worth, while Doyle Brunson and the others teamed up. Doyle Brunson and the others pooled so much money together from gambling in six years. They decided to make their first serious trip to Las Vegas -- on this trip they actually lost all of their winnings.

After that, Doyle Brunson and others decided to stop playing as partners. But Doyle Brunson and his comrades remained friends. Finally, Doyle Brunson decided to settle in Las Vegas.

In Texas Hold'em Poker hands were named after Doyle Brunson. One of these hands that were actually named after him had a 10 and a 2 of any suit. A pretty weak hand in Texas Hold'em Poker. He won in the No Limit Texas Hold'em Poker -- it's one of the events at the World Series of Poker. Doyle Brunson won two years in a row in the year 1976 and 1977.

Another hand that is named "Doyle Brunson" consists of an Ace and Queen of any suit. Ironically he said the he never plays this hand. Doyle Brunson was the underdog on his two grand slam years. Even though he started with a weak hand, Doyle Brunson was able to make a come back and won in both years 1976 and 1977.

One of Doyle Brunson's greatest achievements is probably his book "Super System". It was published in 1978, and an updated version was later released in 2004 called "Super System 2" (this one has a subtitle "How I made one million dollars playing poker"). Besides Doyle Brunson, there were several top ranking poker players who contributed to this work.

The nickname "Texas Dolly" came as a mispronunciation of Doyle Brunson's name. The Dolly part stuck, and from then on his fellows followed suit calling him by the said nickname.

At the World Poker Tour event in 2004, Doyle Brunson won the Legends of Poker. This garnered one million and one hundred thousand dollars. He has continued to win in later years, and now has become a respected legend in the game.
