Primer on Poker Tournaments
A poker tournament is a competition or event where card players vie to win game prizes. There are many kinds of poker tournaments nowadays that differ in terms of joining fees, game set-ups, and prizes.
Typical poker tournaments involve registering and paying buy-in fees and entry fees to join. In these cases, buy-in fees collected from participants are accumulated in what's called the prize pool that players are competing for to win.
Registered participants are given tournament chips to wager with but there are events that allow a player to buy more of these chips to stay in the game. These are called re-buy poker tournaments where a player has the option to pay the buy-in fee while a game is going on so as to re-stack their tournament chips.
There are also poker tournaments that cost nothing to enter. These are called freerolls which are played online. Usually, poker gaming sites that offer freerolls instruct those who want to join to simply register and find freeroll games that are scheduled on their site. And cash prizes won at freerolls are credited to the game winner's account online.
Poker tournaments can be in the form of "sit & go" and "multi-table" set-ups. In either case, the event's winner is the last player standing who has everyone's tournament chips in the end.
Sit & go events are games that start when a designated table has all its seats filled. These are very common tournaments with one or two tables that are always available for card players. Multi-table tournaments, on the other hand, are scheduled and planned events that can have as much as a thousand participants and can go on for a long period of time.
In terms of winner rewards, cash prizes are awarded in poker tournaments. But there are events when the winner is awarded a seat on another tournament with a higher cash prize. These are called satellites or satellite games.
There are different kinds of poker tournaments that vary in terms of entry fees, set-ups, and prizes. One can join these events by paying entry fees and buy-in fees or even without any cash-out in the case of freerolls. Participants can choose from sit & go tournaments for a quick game or multi-table tournaments for a bigger cash prize. And aside from typical cash prizes from a prize pool, one can opt to join satellite games for a seat at a higher paying multi-table game.
